As far as walkthroughs go, I'm inclined to say they do.

Otherwise I concur.

LOL @ Ensign.

I always use guides for online games to get started. For me the whole "story" part of the game can still be interesting even if I know what's going to happen. Also, I'm kind of a slow learner when it comes to what's effective and what isn't, and reading guides made by better players helps speed up the learning process a lot.

I personally (note that, it's a personal thing) like maps. The absolutely awesome thing about guild wars is that most maps that you get are purely just showing the fully explored areas - as long as they don't show quests its fine. (except in some ridiculous cases - see the screenie when i was looking for a quest in Regent's Valley - kill the bandits) This means that you end up exploring any way, for hunting down those quests, and for learning how to mesh together as a team before you go into a mission (or am i the only one who advocates that?) I use a map as soon as i get to the point where exploring is no longer fun, ive been over this place three times now, where is THE DAMNED BANDIT!!! etc. - maps are great for some things, less so for others. However, i think GW maps aren't as advantageous for the people who use them as in other games, as most of the power-ups and bonuses you get, you get off monsters or the end of quests, so knowing that there is a little chest here or a ridge there isn't going to help you that much.

I've got more spoilers that I didn't want to see from Forums than I ever had from a guide

The thing is with a guide you know what you have and you can open it when you need or want to.

There have been some forum posts where just the title gives things away.
So with all due respect to Ensign(I think he's against the guides, Right?)
I see no real difference to guides and Forums - they both have information
that at one time or another you just regret seeing

If we wanted the PURE gaming experience that would be suggested by some we wouldn't even read forums

Ensign is, by his own admission, a soul-sucking demon. Given this, I wouldn't necessarily take his words at face value...

i dont think anyone would come to a fansite if they didnt want extra information about the game they are playing.

that includes character guides, map layouts, ect.

my 2 cents.

also , you forgot a few options,

"i make the guides"

"i enjoy reading the guides"

I dont use them, as I think it will ruin my experience of the game. If some people want to follow in others foot steps and not play the game for what it is i dont mind.

Good point Roken.

However, I do think that there should be guides and maps and such for a last resort.

Let people play the game the way they want. If they want guides then guides should be available to them. I like just going out and exploring on my own--I agree--you can experience the game better this way.

However, I sometimes get frustrated and end up resorting to guides and maps myself.
